The Cheyney University National Alumni Association has alumni chapters throughout the country. One of its most active chapters is the Metro Atlanta Chapter that was established in 1980 and received its official charter in 2011. With a growing number of Cheyney graduates living and working in the metro Atlanta area, it soon became apparent there was a need and a desire on the part of alumni to collectively concentrate their efforts and resources to support their Alma Mater, the oldest HBCU in the nation.
During the history of the Chapter, various alumni have held leadership roles in the development and growth of the chapter. Such individuals as James Burke who held the first meeting at his home; Vicki Redmond and Clarence Jackson both instrumental in the revitalization of the chapter in 1986 after a period of inactivity. Because of the leadership of these forerunners and others such as, Raphael Jones, Arnold Pierce, Benjamin Williams and Gary Clement, the Chapter has become a major entity within the National Association, as well as, within the Historically Black College University (HBCU) community.
After its revitalization phase, the Chapter soon became known for its signature annual fundraising events and community activities including fashion shows, boat rides and the celebrated Juneteenth Parade and Celebration. However, the Chapter is most proud of its work with students and parents providing financial aid workshops, college readiness sessions, and monetary assistance in the form of book awards, travel expenses and personal grants. Another example of the Chapter’s commitment and support was a gift of $25,000 to the University’s Resurgence Program.
Today, under the leadership of Clarence Jackson, the Metro Atlanta Chapter continues to further its mission of providing support to Cheyney University, its students, and alumni. The Metro Atlanta Chapter continues to strengthen its visibility and implement its goals through meaningful relationships resulting in partnerships and alliances designed to support students attending HBCUs. The Chapter recently received the National Alumni Association’s prestigious 2020 Most Philanthropic Chapter Award.
